Annual Public Hunt Permits and the Public Hunt Drawings

Looking for a place to hunt dove this Sunday? Why not check out the 140 special dove and small game hunting units available through the Annual Public Hunting (APH) Permit - $48. In addition to dove and small game units, APH offers hunters the opportunity to hunt deer, feral hogs, quail, squirrel, turkey, waterfowl, and other legal game. A total of more than 200 different areas are available for hunting, including some State Parks, U.S. Forest Service lands, and Wildlife Management Areas. Many areas are open year-round to permit holders. A valid Texas hunting license along with any required stamp endorsements is required in addition to the APH Permit. Permits are valid from Sept. 1 of the current year through August 31 of next year. Youth under age 17 may hunt free with a permitted adult. APH Permits are available at TPWD law enforcement offices and all license vendors or by calling 1-800-TX-LIC-4U (menu choice 1 for license sales and paying by Visa, Discover or MasterCard). You can also purchase permits online. If the permit is purchased at aTPWD office, the Map Booklet will be provided immediately at the time of purchase; otherwise, publications will be mailed to the purchaser within two weeks of purchase. The Public Hunt Drawing System is another means of low-cost, high-quality public hunting opportunities throughout Texas. Individuals are drawn for a Special Permit by random computer selection from a qualified pool of applicants. Special permit hunt categories include General, Guided and Youth only. Some of the hunts listed under the General title are archery deer, crossbow deer, gun deer, and gun mule deer. There are a total of 16 different categories. Guided categories are a Bighorn Sheep Hunt Package and Guided Gemsbock Hunt Package. Youth Only offers applications for Gun Deer either sex, antlerless/spike, and management. Other Youth Only opportunities are alligator, javelina, exotic, feral hog and spring turkey. Age requirements, fees, and application deadlines can be found in the Special Drawing and Regular Permit Hunting Opportunities Booklet (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/publications/pwdpubs/media/pwd_bk_w7000_0112.pdf). Current and former applicants can receive information on preference points, status of a submitted application, and drawing results by calling the automatic information system at (512) 389-8221. GOOD. Water slightly stained; 74 degrees; 0.22 feet above pool. Crappie are fair to good on brush piles in 12-15 feet of water around docks. Bass are fair around shallow cover. Catfish are excellent on retaining walls and shallow cover where shad are spawning.
