Crappie Anglers of Texas February 2016




CAT recently held its 2nd Crappie Anglers of Texas Qualifier Tournament of 2016 on Lake Lavon February 20,2016. We had 30 teams participate in a very windy day of fishing, 12 teams signed up for Division 1 and Division 2 had 18 teams. Here are the results:

In Division 1, Keith Moore (Allen, TX) and Mackey Whyte (Allen, TX) won first place with a stringer of seven fish weighing 9.02 pounds. This team also took home the Bobby Garland Big Fish Award with a slab weighing 2.10 pounds and the Pro Angler Elite Rod Challenge Award. Second place was won by Paul O'Bier (Gunter, TX) and George Nelon (Boyd, TX) with a seven fish stringer weighing 7.14 pounds. This team also won the Slab Bandit Crazy Eight Award. Chris Waters (Denton, TX) and Larry Middleton (Boyd, TX) took home 3rd place with their stringer of seven fish weighing 5.59 pounds. This team also netted the Constant Pursuit Outfitters Lightest Stringer Award. Other awards in Division 1 went to: Chris Scott (Sanger,TX) and Willie Scott (Denton, TX) were the winners of the Minnow Bucket Lucky Dog Award.

In Division 2, Clay Gann (Hideaway, TX) and Todd Froebe (Lindale, TX) won first place with a stringer weighing 8.56 pounds. This team also won the Slab Bandit Crazy Eight Award and the Bobby Garland Big Fish Award with a nice crappie weighing 1.76 pounds. Second place was won by Max Dukes (Murphy, TX) with a stringer of 3 fish weighing 4.18 pounds. Stuart Angelle (Flower Mound,TX) rounded out the top three spots and took home 3rd place with his three fish stringer weighing 2.61 pounds. Stuart also took home the Pro Angler Elite Rod Challenge Award .Other awards in Division 2 went to: Joe Willis won the Big Earl’s Bait and Tackle Lucky Dog Award.

Fishing Report from TPWD (Apr. 24)

GOOD. Water slightly stained; 72 degrees; 1.10 feet above pool. More rain in the forecast for the weekend. Bass are good, with the fish beginning post-spawn spread out. A good bait to try is shallow running squarebill crankbaits, smaller ones that go no more than 2-3 feet down. Water in creek areas may still be rain stained, so try the darker colors there, shad and light perch colors in the clearer places. Hybrid stripers have also been good, often mixed with white bass, though little surface feeding has been observed. Crappie are fair, as they spread back out, fishing the open, deeper water has been hampered by wind and storms. Blue catfish remain good in 3-22 feet, often coming into the creek shallows for shad.
